Big Secret On Wall Street

A Letter To My Son

Porter Uses A Gift To Offer An Enduring Life Lesson

Here at Porter & Co., we take the holidays seriously. We have been celebrating the “12 Days of Christmas,” and will be returning to our regularly scheduled research and insight on Monday, January 6.

During that time, we asked members of the Porter & Co. team – editorial staff, analysts, marketers, and others – to select an (generally investment-related) essay, article, speech, book excerpt, or other text, and to share their reflections on it. We hope they’ve helped you get to know the family at Porter & Co. a little better – and perhaps offer some fresh perspective from voices you don’t usually hear.

Today’s 12 Days of Christmas selection is from Porter, sharing the letter he wrote to his son Traveler about life, investing, and more. We hope that you enjoy it… and we’ll be back with our usual program on January 6.

In September 2023, Porter’s oldest son, Traveler, turned 16. Porter gifted him $17,000 (the maximum amount allowable as a non-taxable gift)… and then wrote him a heartfelt letter distilling a quarter-century of financial wisdom into just a few pages, to advise him on what to do with the money.

He also wrote about the three factors you need to be a successful investor… four questions to ask when considering a lifetime investment in a company…

Of course, the letter isn’t all investment research. Porter also tossed in some nuggets of hard-won life wisdom, including gems like “Being poor sucks” and “You don’t want to go through life without teeth.”

The letter is such a good read – and so valuable for investors of any age – that with Porter’s permission, we edited it a bit and turned it into a published report.

You can download the full “Letter to Traveler” PDF here.

We’ll be back January 6 with a regular issue of Porter’s Daily Journal.

To your success,

Porter & Co.
